Letter Classification -Choosing The Odd Letter Group

Letter Classification: Classification means to analyse the items of a given group on the basis of a certain common quality they possess and then spot the stranger or odd one out. In this test, you are given a group of certain items, out of which all except one are similar to one another in some manner. The candidate is required to choose this one item which does not fit into the given group.

Choosing the odd Letter Group: In this type of questions, usually four or five groups of letters are given. Three or four of them are similar to each other in some manner while one is different and this is to be chosen by the candidate as the answer.

Illustration: Choose the odd one out from the group UTSR, IHGE, NMLK , ZYXW, SRQP

(a) UTSR     (b) IHGE       (c) NMLK       (d) ZYXW      (e) SRQP

Answer: (b)

Solution: When we analyse the group UTSR, NMLK, ZYXW, SRQP  the letter are in reverse alphabetical order but IHGE does not follow the same rule hence is the odd one in the group.

Illustration: Choose the odd one out in the group RNJH, SOKG, QMIE, MIEA,  PLHD

(a) RNJH      (b) SOKG    (c) QMIE        (d) MIEA      (e)  PLHD

Answer: (a)

Solution: When we analyse the group in the elements SOKG, QMIE, MIEA,  PLHD we see that there is a gap of three letters between the consecutive letters, but RNJH does not follow the same rule.

Example 3: (a) ACZX      (b) BDYW    (c) EGVT        (d) GITR     (e) CEUS

Solution: (e) In all other groups, first and second as well as fourth and third letters are alternative . Also, the first and third letters occupy the same positions from the beginning and end of the alphabet respectively.

Illustration: Choose the odd one out from the group: AEGC, HLNJ, OSVQ, VZBX

(a) AEGC      (b) HLNJ    (c) OSVQ   (d) VZBX

Answer :(c)

Solution : When we analyse the group

In AEGC A represents position 1, E is at position 5, G is at position 7 and C is at position 3

In HLNJ  H represents position 8, L is at position 12, N is at position 14 and J is at position 10

In OSVQ O represents position 15, S is at position 19, V is at position 22 and Q is at position 17

In VZBX V represents position 22, Z is at position 26, B is at position 2 and X is at position 24

From the analysis, we see that group (c) letter in which some are at even position and some are at odd position whereas all other groups have either all elements at even position or odd position Hence (c) is the odd group.
